Masters of Luck and Death

Masters of Luck and Death was originally going to be the second game, and then later on would have been the third and final board game in the WB&RM/NG series, 100% compatible with the other two.

However, this one was not going to be just another war game. The subject of this was the choosing of a new Pharaoh for the Holy Country (Kethaela). The scenario was that your starting character awakens one morning to discover that the old Pharaoh had died, and that the contest called “the master of luck and death contest” was about to begin, with you as one of the candidates.

Each candidate would have to go around the board and gain allies to help back his nomination. These were of two types: mundane units, generally military types; and mystical assistants. The military types could be sent against each other, other candidates or the mystical types to disrupt, destroy or capture them.

The Mystical Types were shown as runes. This is why the original WB&RM had runes on the leader counters—they were going to be able to be used in this game.

These runes, the mystical assistants, could be taken to specific places on the board and “sacrificed” for a larger entity that had the same combined runes. These would have been like the “exotics” in WB&RM, wherein they had a very special and specific power (alter the tides, make volcanic eruption, bring a tidal wave, etc.) as well as securing the friendship of many of the military types to your side.

It was a pretty complex game, and before I finished sussing out the hierarchies of entities I had produced Nomad Gods. And then, before finishing it, we discovered Roleplaying Games and shifted our efforts into that type instead of Board Games. As a result, this was never made and many years later we used the title for a HeroQuest item instead (see the HQ item here
